Sutton / Lyndonville Lyndon Center

Sutton, Vermont where Edward and Josephine Wood lived was a very small farming town. This rural agricultural community had about 500 residents in 1950. To give you an idea of the size of Sutton, the center of town had a gas station, general store, US Post Office all in one building property. The owner, Madeline Miles, lived at home next door.

From the photos above you can see that the town of Lyndonville at the time had a much larger population and commerce than Sutton. It has a town center and several villages. At the time, there was a private boarding school, Lyndon Institute, that served as the high school for all the surrounding communities in the county. Five of Edward and Josephine Wood's children graduated from that boarding school. By early 1970’s, Lyndon Institute, discontinued operating as a private boarding school, but continued to offer admittance to high school students from neighboring towns.
