Woods House: A log cabin house built by hand by Edward Fenton Wood Jr., a Black carpenter from Sutton, Vermont. The house is being used as a female dormitory for skiers at the academy.

Wall in the log cabin house where the tools used by Edward Fenton Wood Jr. were previously displayed as a tribute to his excellent work. This wall will now house the newly created wooden memorial with tools.

Edward Fenton Wood Jr. built the Interior walls and ceiling made of unpainted natural cedar planks and constructed by using the "tongue-and-groove" joint construction. A tongue and groove joint is a type of woodworking joint that simplifies the installation process of wood boards and materials.

Woods House ski storage room

Recognition to the builder carved into the wood wall in the house by a resident skier. Edward Fenton Wood Jr., the Carpenter and Builder of the Woods House.

A "Cedar Memorial" built by hand by his son Edward Fenton Wood III houses the tools of the carpenter's trade at that time. It also contains a Black granite photo memorial to his father, Edward Fenton Wood Jr and his brother, Paul Jasper Wood.
Burke Mountain Ski Academy
In 1970, a young ski racer named Martha Coughlin approached coach seeking year-round training to help her achieve her dream of being named to the U.S. Ski Team. Witherell quickly agreed, and Burke Mountain Academy was born. The school was the first ski academy of its kind in the United States. Burke is the leading ski racing academy in the United States, and having produced numerous national team members and Olympians along the way.
The Burke Mountain Academy “Woods House” ski lodge was built by a skilled carpenter, Edward Fenton Wood, Jr., a long term local Black resident of Sutton, Vermont.
